Grants Pass man dead in Riddle shooting, suspect declared
The public was warned to be on the lookout for a 19-year-old man described as “armed and dangerous” after a shooting in the Douglas County town of Riddle that claimed the life of a Grants Pass man. The suspect was identified as Gauge Douglas James Main of Riddle. The Douglas County sheriff’s office said he left the scene of the shooting in a stolen 2017 Honda Civic sedan bearing the Oregon plate number 276 PAT. A booking photo from a prior arrest was released. “Main should be considered armed and dangerous,” deputies said. “Anyone who observes the vehicle or Main is asked to call 911. The shooting happened late Monday night in the area of Main Street and Third Avenue in Riddle. Deputies found 20-year-old Devonte Lovell Clark of Grant Pass dead at the scene. Another man from Grants Pass, 29-year-old Killian Mavity, had been shot in the arm and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The underlying circumstances of the shooting was not referenced by the sheriff’s office. Clark had a local record in Grants Pass that included two arrests this year, one for possession of cocaine and the other on a weapons charge. In that incident, police said Clark was being treated for a possible overdose and threatened a paramedic with a knife when the paramedic offered to transport Clark to the hospital. The remark — “You know what’s going to happen if you try to take me to the hospital” — was overheard by officers, who subsequently relieved Clark of a knife as well as brass knuckles. Clark was sentenced to 30 days in jail on Nov. 6, but appears to have been released immediately due to time-served. In reaching a plea agreement in the case, prosecutors said the conviction was Clark’s first as an adult and that “hopefully these incidents have served as a wakeup call for him.” Main was facing criminal assault charges in a domestic assault case. In September, Myrtle Creek police said the 6-foot-1, 255-pound defendant attacked his mother in a dispute over ownership of a car. His next appearance in that case was Jan. 29. ——— Reach city editor Chris Bristol at 541-474-3716 or cbristol@thedailycourier.com. |
