Crews knocking down numerous fires after lightning storm
A lightning storm that rolled through Josephine County on Sunday morning sparked a number of fires that have kept crews busy all day. Small fires were fought in the Applegate Valley's Missouri Flat area; on Little Grayback Peak north of Caves Highway east of Cave Junction; off of Foothill Boulevard; on Mungers Butte; on Roundtop Mountain; on Red Mountain; and on Walker Mountain, among other sites. As of 4 p.m., aerial reconnaissance is turning up more smoke columns in the Josephine County backcountry. A helicopter made numerous water drops on the Red Mountain fire, which was visible from Jumpoff Joe Creek Road. The largest fire in Southern Oregon at the moment is near Eagle Point. The 30-acre Green Top Mountain Fire prompted fire managers to call in small air tankers from Central Oregon. |
